Your next four paychecks
Each one pays the bills due from its payday to the day before the next. The paycheck planner shows up to twelve.
Why some months have three paychecks
Twenty-six paychecks a year, twelve months, and the remainder has to land somewhere.
Every two weeks is 26 paychecks a year, not the 24 that “two a month” suggests. A month holds two 14-day steps with days to spare, and it holds a third only when your first payday of the month falls near its start: on the 1st to the 3rd in a 31-day month, the 1st or 2nd in a 30-day month, or the 1st in a 29-day February. A 28-day February never has one.
With the example pay of $1,850.00, 26 paychecks come to $48,100.00. Counting two a month gives $44,400.00, so the two extra paychecks are worth $3,700.00. Your own months and your own figure are in the table above.
Two ways to budget biweekly pay
Neither is wrong. Pick the one you’ll keep doing.
Paycheck by paycheck. Each check pays the bills due before the next one, which is what the calculator above does. It suits bills that land unevenly, because you see the tight paycheck in advance.
Twenty-four and bank the extras. Build your monthly budget on two paychecks a month, and treat the third paycheck in the two extra months as unplanned money for savings, debt or a bill fund. Months stay predictable, and it depends on you leaving the extra checks alone.
Being paid every two weeks is not the same as being paid twice a month. Twice a month is 24 paychecks on fixed dates, such as the 1st and 15th, and it never has a third-paycheck month. The paycheck planner handles both.

How do I budget if I get paid biweekly?
List every bill with its due date and your next payday. Give each paycheck the bills due before the next payday, and see what’s left. The calculator above does that for the next four paychecks, and the paycheck planner does up to twelve.
Then look at your extra-paycheck months in the table and decide in advance what those two checks are for.
Is it better to budget biweekly or monthly?
If your bills land at different points in the month, biweekly shows which paycheck is tight. A monthly budget is simpler, and it hides timing. Many people use both: a monthly plan, with the biweekly view to catch the tight paychecks.
Does biweekly mean every two weeks or twice a month?
Here it means every two weeks, which is also what fortnightly means. Twice a month is a different schedule with fixed dates. Some people say biweekly for both, so check your pay stub for the actual dates.
What do I do with the third paycheck?
That’s your call. Common choices are savings, paying down a debt, or a fund for yearly bills. The point of seeing the months in advance is that the extra check doesn’t get spent by accident.
